Students at the Nelly Berman School had the opportunity today to travel with the school to the local theater to watch the Metropolitan Opera’s Simulcast showing of “Aida” by Giuseppe Verdi.

The story follows an Ethiopian princess, Aida, who is captured by the Egyptian military. The military commander Radames falls in love with the princess, a dialogue that is complicated by his loyalty to the King of Egypt and the King’s daughter’s unrequited infatuation with the commander himself.

Students of multiple instrument groups all enjoyed watching the brilliance of the orchestra in accompaniment to the grandiose production. “Aida” was premiered in 1871 at the Khedivial Opera house in Cairo, Egypt, and the magic of this wonderfully written opera is still alive almost 150 years later!
