Each day, in the morning, campers attend music history classes with Dr. Ariane Alexander and art history classes. The two teachers will coordinate the music composers of each period with the famous artists of that era. Music and art are very closely related and we would like our students to have the knowledge of the greatest artistic creators of these periods. This overarching view will deepen their understanding of aesthetic processes of expression in each historic period.
To mix intellectual studies with fun, students will have their choice of flavors of ice-cream and have fun running around outside, playing capture the flag! The absolutely love it and instantly make friends. For a relaxing break, campers watch movies while having lunch, chat and socialize.
In the afternoon, students have supervised practice time when they can work on polishing a piece for the Friday concert. Some of the more advanced students may be placed into chamber ensembles grouped based on age and experience. Members of our esteemed faculty will coach chamber groups and lead supervised practicing.
We offer regular lessons after camp (as part of our regular summer semester) for students to work on and polish their newly assigned piece(s) with their teachers or other faculty for the Friday concert. Students will be assigned a new piece(s) several weeks before the camp to work on during camp. These individual lessons help students achieve the challenge of learning and presenting a new piece in such short time. Regular fees will apply to these lessons as they are not a part of camp tuition. Our summer registration will be sent out in May.
Friday is a culmination of everything campers did that week. Students tell us that their favorite part of the week is the quiz game on Friday. Campers are divided into several groups that mix the older and younger students and compete with their newly acquired extraordinary knowledge for points and candy. The game is like a musical Jeopardy! Friday is also the day when parents get to enjoy their children playing at the concert and hear the tremendous achievements made over just five days with the help of our talented and devoted teachers.
