Violist and violinist Sandra VandeGeijn is a viola graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music and Peabody Conservatory, where she studied with Heidi Castleman and Roberto Diaz, respectively. She recently moved to Philadelphia from Baltimore, Maryland, where she freelanced throughout the Baltimore, Wilmington, DE, and Washington, DC region and also maintained a private teaching studio. She is a regular member of the viola sections of the Delaware Symphony and OperaDelaware and performs regularly with other local groups. While living in Baltimore, she was a regular member of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, and also performed often with the Washington National Opera and Richmond Symphony, as well as a number of other ensembles in the region. As a member of the string trio Gliss! she has performed on such series as Sundays at Three in Columbia, Maryland, and the Noon Concert Series at Old Saint Paul’s Church in Baltimore. Her summers are spent in Cooperstown, New York, where she plays assistant principal viola for the Glimmerglass Opera. More recently, she became a member of the Sarasota Opera Orchestra, where she is now assistant principal viola and performs in four operas each winter season. She has also performed with orchestras and festivals in China, Japan, Singapore, Aspen, Colorado, and Key West, Florida. Sandra performs primarily on viola, but also plays violin regularly in concerts with the Delaware Symphony and OperaDelaware, as well as with local choral and church groups. Before joining the teaching faculty at the Nelly Berman School last fall, Sandra maintained a studio in her home teaching both violin and viola, as well as teaching at the Bel Air School of Music in Maryland for 2 years. She has also completed the course “Teaching the Violin and Viola: Creating a Healthy Foundation” from Northwestern University.
